VOLUNTEER IN SRI LANKA

VOLUNTEER WITH US

Ayubowan!
It stands for ‘Long Life’ and is a way of greeting people in Sri Lanka. Here, at Ahungalla Sea Turtles, we wish the same for every sea turtle and marine life out there.
If you share the same passion as we do to save endangered species, help baby sea turtles and make the world a better place, come meet us.
You’ll have the time of your life in Sri Lanka, where the coastlines are filled with swaying palm trees, golden sands, surfing spots and limitless waves! Volunteering with us will add to your adventure, shape your perspective and help you learn about the marine life in Sri Lanka.

Endanger Sea Turtles To Protect

There are 5 major Sea Turtle Species you can protect with us:

  1. Oliver Ridley
  2. Green Turtles
  3. Loggerheads
  4. Hawksbills
  5. Leatherback

We have to step in and save them because:

  • They often get entangled and hurt in fishing gear.
  • Some people poach illegally trade the eggs, meat and shells.
  • Sea turtles don’t know the perils of plastic and other debris, but we do.
  • Coastal development encroaches their habitat.
  • Only 1 out of 1000 baby sea turtles survive.
  • If we don’t save them now, our children and their children will never see them.

What will your tasks include?

  • Conserve the turtle population.
  • Help bury the sea turtle eggs in our premises in order to rescue them from the poachers.
  • Conduct daily checks on the eggs to check their hatching time and help the emerging baby turtles.
  • Take care of cleaning, feeding and helping the turtles in whatever way possible.
  • Wash the sea turtle tanks and refill them with sea water.
  • Prepare food to feed the turtles.
  • Hand feed the turtles, as the hatchery has several turtles with injuries.
  • Patrol the beach once a day to look for any pieces of fishing nets, which cause a large number of deaths in sea turtles.
  • Tour the beach at night for nesting turtles as part of this research.
  • Enjoy time on the beach.
  • Learn how to cook Sinhalese food.
  • Experience BBQ on the beach too.

Who should join?

  • School and college students.
  • Gap year travellers.
  • Backpackers and tourists.
  • People who love sea turtles.
  • Those who wish to conserve marine life.
  • If you want to learn and gain international work experience.
